What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet is a global movement and nonprofit organization that was founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, the owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. 

The core idea behind this initiative is simple yet powerful: businesses and individuals commit to giving at least 1% of their annual sales or income to environmental causes.

This 1% commitment may seem small, but when multiplied across a network of businesses and individuals worldwide, it has the potential to drive significant positive change for our planet. 

Since its inception, 1% for the Planet has facilitated over $500 million in support for environmental initiatives and nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving and protecting our natural world – and the people on it.
